Family History Snippet:

The Lang and Delatour families of Barnstaple were closely inter-linked in the 18th Century.  Samuel Lang married Jane Delatour in 1766 and Jane's brother, James married Honor Lang in 1764.  James was a Gunner on various ships and records show that he sailed regularly to America and the West Indies in dangerous conditions.  He fought on ships caught up in the American War of Independence, exchanging fire with French vessels.  His last voyage was with his own 13 year old son, William Lang Delatour in 1781-2.  James ended up in New York Hospital and there is no record of his return nor that of his son who must have been stranded there with him.  James' will was proven in 1783 showing that he died around that time.  The Delatour line stretches back in England to Peter or Pierre Delatour, a French Hugenot, who hade fled France in the late seventeenth century following religious persecution there and made his way to Barnstaple in Devon.
